The precursors of the modern alphabets were the “picture alphabets” of ancient humankind. These written signs were simplified drawings of real objects. One of the oldest examples is found in artifacts from Canaanite society, c.1600 B.C.
Present day Arabic, Hebrew and English (Latin) alphabets all trace their roots back to these original Canaanite symbols.
There are twenty-two works in this series. Each is based on one of the original Canaanite symbols and includes the English, Hebrew and Arabic letters which evolved from it.
The pictorial symbol is the title of each piece.
They are composed of acetate, spray paint, gouache, ink, paper, pencil, plastic, watercolor and wax on illustration board.
This series has been shown in Jerusalem, London, Hong Kong and New York City.
In 1994, one of these pieces was presented to Hillary Clinton in Jerusalem on the occasion of the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan and is now in the Collection of the White House.
The works below are available for purchase.
